The pitfalls of bearing tomorrow

You hear so often people saying, “God will never give us more than we can bear.” And while we know that’s scriptural, we can often find ourselves thinking “If God thinks I can bear this, then he doesn’t know me at all!”

But here is where I think we get things confused. In the Lord’s prayer we ask, “Give us THIS DAY our daily bread.” Yet, through worry, doubt, fear. and the acceptance of stress, we find ourselves asking for the bread designated for tomorrow, next week, and next year.

We’ve twisted things. The fact is…God WON’T give us more than we can bear — for today. He has been quite clear that tomorrow is not promised to anyone and that we should let the burdens of tomorrow take care of itself. Therefore, when we find ourselves at the brink of our lives thinking that we’re carrying too much, I can only conclude that one of two things are happening.

Either God has placed more of his strength in us than we have come to realize or we’ve taken it upon ourselves to bear tomorrow’s challenges instead of what has been assigned to us today.

I will consider this the next time I find myself saying, “I’m overwhelmed.”
